American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM)

The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. Certification as an ABOM diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care.

Get Certified! Obesity Medicine Certification requires:

  • Fellowship-Trained pathway: Proof of successful completion of an on-site clinical fellowship with an obesity component of at least 500 hours of training on the topic of obesity or obesity-related conditions.


  • CME pathway: A minimum of 60 credits of AMA PRA Category 1 Creditâ„¢; AOA Category 1-A; or Mainpro-M1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) on the topic of obesity
